Single Leads

The Lead - Range: D4 to F sharp 6 & C4 to E6

Designed by Dr.Ellie Mannette when he was a youth in Trinidad. This beautiful steel pan is in the augmented 3 rds formation and produces a great quality sound like many other designs of lead steel pan instruments that was created; it is a common style worldwide.

The F sharp which was located in the center of the pan has now become a "rim note". The E and D formally rim notes, are now located away from the rim, bringing the total amount of rim notes to twelve. This design now has the desirable 12 ,12, 5 note relationship. Twelve rim notes, twelve inner notes and five center notes.

Most steel bands in Trinidad used the unmodified version of this single lead steel pan and many still use the Invaders Lead in its unmodified form. Techniques mastered on Lead instrument are easily applied to all other members of the steel pan family; rapid progress can be made on lead instrument, so they are highly recommended for beginners; especially this style.

Single Leads

Designed in the 4ths & 5ths right handed formation, this pan produces a great quality sound like many other designs of lead steelpan instruments ever created and is a common style worldwide. About 50% of steelbands in the birthplace of steelpan instruments (Trinidad) use the D range single lead. Techniques mastered on Lead instrument are easily applied to all other members of the steelpan family; rapid progress can be made on lead instrument, so they are highly recommended for beginners; especially this style.

Single Lead - Range: D4 to F6

This is another popular style of lead designed for total playing and mobility.Designed on the Ellie Mannette Invaders lead; lost of history relates to this instrument. Playing this style instrument does not confine the player to one specific area of the pan when playing in any given key. The player is able to comfortably execute simple and highly difficult passages of music because the pan's design easily divides the work load on both hands.
